The best complement for sneakers

Anyone who is not used to competing will find the choice of shoe accessories to be a trifle, but when your life revolves around a race, things change, even when those competitions are just part of your “leisure”, as is my case.

I don’t make a living from triathlon events, but for me it is something very important in my life. Apart from family and work, it is what occupies the most time. Even, let it be between us, sometimes we sacrifice a little time from work (and/or family) to train a little more in order to tune up before a test.

And when every second counts, all the elements are decisive, even the small details, because it is precisely the small details that can easily give us a considerable profit… or ruin a test. Something as seemingly irrelevant as changing laces for rubber bands can be key. And I’ll tell you why.

A close friend of mine, a fellow trainee, was rushing through the final rehearsals ahead of an important triathlon event. At the last minute he decided to go back to laces, after several tests with rubber in the shoes. He was not entirely sure about the use of these rubber bands because he considered that they might not fit well and he thought that the most logical thing was to go back to the laces. It can be a second up or down, but if you don’t adjust the shoe well you can be uncomfortable throughout the race.

But the laces also have their negative side and that is that they can be released at a given moment. And that’s what happened to my friend, with such bad luck that when he let go he got caught and fell. There was no injury to regret, but the pain of the fall ruined the race test and with it the mark. Just for having decided at the last minute to change a shoe accessory.

So the next time you don’t take things seriously, such as changing laces for rubber bands on your shoes, keep in mind that even the smallest details can be decisive.

Two very easy sewing jobs for beginners

If you are encouraged to start using your sewing machine and you already control the basics of it, it is time to start doing the first jobs for the home. It is an important step and one that will give you great satisfaction because you will finally be able to see that your effort pays off and that you can show off what you do in your home.

One of the simplest jobs is to make a tablecloth for your newspaper table. For this you need a piece of a fabric that you like and that is suitable for tablecloths, for example, a mixture of cotton with polyester, suffered and with a beautiful design. Cut the measurement of the tablecloth and also of the napkins and, with the help of a fabric chalk, trace the edges. Fold the excess fabric to hem and secure with pins.

The basting process can be done by hand or by machine. This is to the taste of each person, but for beginners it is usually easier to do it by hand until they get the technique and do not slip the fabric. Once basted, you just have to sew it on the machine, paying special attention to the corner trims.

The napkins are made the same as the tablecloth, but they are simpler as they are much smaller. With the excess fabric and elastic tape you can create some ribbons to hold the napkins and make them more attractive on the table. If you buy the ribbon at a haberdashery that has a good Elastic Ribbon distributor, you will find it in many colors. Choose one similar to the fabric and thus, although it is transparent, you will not notice practically anything.

Another very simple job is a cushion cover. You only need to cut two pieces of fabric of the desired size, be it square or rectangular. Keep in mind that the thicker the filling, the more it will occupy, so if you want the size of the cushion to be a specific one, you will have to make the cover slightly larger depending on the thickness.

On one side of the fabric, create a wide hem, baste it and sew with a nice finish. On one of the fabrics create two buttonholes on the hem of a size more or less large. On the wrong side, baste both pieces of fabric joining them at three of the ends, the ones without hem, and sew. Flip the fabric over and you will have your cover. You will only have to sew two buttons at the height of the buttonholes, insert the filling and close the buttons to have your cushion ready.

Crafts with girls

I never liked doing my homework when I went to school. It was frustrating for me to have to get home and get back to books, especially math exercises. But since I was a ‘coward’ and I didn’t like to fail either, I ended up doing it reluctantly. With the exams it was different: they meant concentrating an effort on something more specific and that seemed fine to me.

After so many years, homework returns, but this time for the girls’ chores. Little by little they have been picking up pace at school and they already send them homework in which parents have to get involved. And the subject continues to bore me a lot, although this remains between us. I suffer especially when it comes to crafts that I have never been good at. But if they ask me for help, what am I going to say.

The last task has been on recycling. They had to use different recycled materials to form a panel explaining the process in which certain products are recycled. The fact is that the girl has «demanded» that everything is really recycled products. You already know what the little ones are like, and the seriousness they put into games and homework. Fortunately, they are not like me in this regard: I would have completed the record with the first thing I caught at home.

So we all look for a manufacturer of Cordon recycled material to incorporate into the panel. The truth is that doing homework with the girls I realized the importance that recycling has long acquired in many industries. Administrations and governments promote these recycling processes to minimize the effects on the environment and companies also assume their responsibility, being aware that their good actions in this regard will also help the image of the company.

In the end, we found a manufacturer of recycled material Cordon and we carried out the task that they had entrusted to us to the letter. I almost even enjoyed it. Let’s see if at this point I’m going to start to get the hang of homework …
